The first key to successful leadership
The first key to successful leadership is responsibility. It is not negotiable of the place of responsibility to promoting and enhancing one’s ability of leadership. Position calls for leadership, and leadership calls for responsibility. There is no controversy about responsibility been the right key to successful leadership. I am not disputing the place of character formation and its impact on exhibiting leadership.
You have to agree with me that even in the right character formation for leadership, one has to take the full responsibility upon him or herself. There is nothing about successful leadership that does not form its base on responsibility. No one can take away responsibility from a successful leadership. It can only be responsibility! Once responsibility did not take place and run its full role in any leadership platform it can lead to complete obscurity and disaster.
Position calls for leadership, and leadership calls for responsibility
What is leadership? A couple of people have defined leadership as the act of influence. Yes I am not contradicting that fact. If leadership is an act of influence, the act of influence simply means responsibility. You can’t be a person of influence if you don’t think yourself a person of responsibility. If you don’t think it responsibility, you can’t embrace it and once you cannot embrace it, you can’t influence it.
What is leadership? From my conviction leadership simply means responsibility. Leadership is responsibility. It is quite amazing how some people do not like the word responsibility, but that does not change the fact that when it is neglected, can cause a tremendous havoc. Anyone who desires the place of leadership should think of responsibility. There is nothing exceptional with the place of leadership rather than responsibility which is the ability to serve.
If leadership is an act of influence, the act of influence simply means responsibility
According to the book of Genesis chapter 1 verses 26, it was clear that responsibility was the essence of man coming into place. Responsibility is the essence of man living. Responsibility is also the essence of man exercising dominion.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”
You see from the beginning of everything when there was a call for leadership, God thought about responsibility. Leadership is beyond just occupying space. Leadership is beyond titleship. Leadership is beyond dishing out order. Leadership is everything about taking responsibility. Failure in the place of leadership is failure in the place of responsibility. When you see a leadership that has failed, it simply its lack of taking due responsibility. Everything failure in the place of leadership is attributed to lack of responsibility.

Once there is a trace of lack of responsibility in the process of exercising leadership, doom is at the corner if proper and adequate considerations is not taking. There are abuse of offices when it comes to leadership because those that occupy the position are not ready to embrace the necessary responsibilities that would transform lives and the society at large. Of course when men that lack responsibility occupy leadership positions, abuse of office is inevitable. They think more of enriching oneself than bringing transformation to the society. They think of settling oneself than thinking of the welfare of the people. Nothing matters to them about laying an indelible legacy, but all they think about is an opportunity to evade family poverty.
Since we have established the fact that leadership is all about responsibility, that should be the watchword to anyone who wants to assume the position of leadership. Leadership is more than one’s ambition and self satisfaction which has no impact to the society. The true satisfaction of a leader is when the people are satisfied with the level of transformation leadership brought to the society. The wisest man ever lived puts it this was,
“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” (Proverbs chapter 29 verses 2)
He says when men of responsibility are in authority, the people rejoice because there will be development going on meeting the need of the people and transforming the whole place. But when men that lack responsibility are in position, the people mourn because they have nothing on the table to show forth to cause impact in the society.
Conclusion
Responsibility remains the key for anyone who is willing to assume the position of leadership and to bring in tremendous transformation in the society and impact lives.
