Show yourself a man when leadership calls

1 – Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,

2 – I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

3 – And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

4 – That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.” (1Kings chapter 2 verses 1 to 4)

Leadership is responsibility and responsibility is leadership

On the route to take up leadership, king David told Solomon that the first principle to exercise courage and effective leadership is to be a man. Being a man is what is takes to lead. Being a man is not by age, being a man is all about the training and knowledge one has acquired. King David has taught Solomon how to be a man, and also encouraged him to be that man.

It does not matter what you think, it is your responsibility to show yourself a man. If you do not show yourself a man, people’s choice and decision might write you off. It will get to a point when you will not have a say of your own. Leadership is all about showing yourself as a man, in showing yourself a man, you take responsibility.  Leadership is responsibility and responsibility is leadership. You must understand this if you ever desire to deliver.

Show yourself a man who accepts the blame irrespective of who is faulty and take the full responsibility to improve

As long as you assume a leadership position, you get to show yourself a man. The success and failure of any enterprise the leader will be held responsible. You don’t need to throw the blame on anyone when the matter arises.  Show yourself a man who accepts the blame irrespective of who is faulty and take the full responsibility to improve.  Situations will always show up to test how adequate you are in leading other.

May you show yourself a man to able to handle any situation that will show. King Solomon after listening to the word of his father, took full charge of his leadership and never gave room for any controversy. Show yourself a man to be able to read through the line when issues are presented. You should be able to read people’s motives behind the move they are making. That is why when Adonijah showed up with the thought of having his father wife, Solomon knew if he allowed this, it was going to throw much dust in his reign and dealt with it at once.

15 – “And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.

16 – And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.

17 – And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.

21 – And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.

22 – And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.

23 – Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

24 – Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.” (1Kings chapter 2 verses 15 to 24)

Don’t ruin your leadership in sentiment no matter who is involved.

Do not forget that Adonijah once went and paraded himself as the next king. He never invited Solomon in the party he organised to enthrone and celebrate himself as the king. The same person who would have been in hiding, all of a sudden without fear came after his father’s wife. You should know that Adonijah was up to something else. Whoever is behind him advising him to go about such request is what king Solomon was never conversant with but he knew once he dealt with Adonijah every other thing will back out. That is why he never hesitated to show himself a man.

Show yourself a man not to allow evil to thrive when you have what it takes to put a stop to it. Adonijah went through king Solomon mother wanted to have Abishag the Shunammite to wife. If he had allowed Adonijah to get through, he would have gained more ground to improve in his propaganda. Never you romance with the devil in your leadership. Don’t ruin your leadership in sentiment no matter who is involved.

Conclusion:

If you do not show yourself a man in your leadership, you will look like a rat in the midst of cats. You know what that means in one’s leadership.  When one makes himself a rat, the cat will devour it. It is a dangerous one when one does not show himself a man, taking full responsibility of his leadership, knowing full well that he will be blamed at the outcome of his leadership.
