Do not forget where you are coming from as a foreigner

It is obvious that people travel for different reasons

You should realise that there is a reason why God helped you during the process to obtain the documents for your travel. It is obvious that people travel for different reasons.  Some left the country for their own personal interests. That is why when they get abroad, they forget those who were there for them during hard and difficult times.

There are those who went as far as to forget those who assisted their trip in one way and the other. People helped to pay for his visa fee. People helped to contribute the cash he used to purchase necessary items including clothes that he will use in the foreign land. People contributed millions to enable him purchase the flight ticket. How he has gotten abroad, he forgets all efforts from those around him in a hurry.

“When the right hand washes the left hand, the left hand will also wash the right hand”

People are not doing charity work to just spend all those resources on you. It is an investment that people invested on you. They were trusting God to see you so that you will be of great help to them. Although there are those who would not mind assisting without expecting return, but there are those who are hoping for a return. You can’t take that to be a wrong motive from them. They are trusting God to use you to answer their heart prayer.

There is an adage in my dialect that says, “When the right hand washes the left hand, the left hand will also wash the right hand”. I understand the fact that some persons did not seek for people’s help before they were able to travel,  but we all need to realise that wherever God is taking us is for a course so that He will reveal His glory.  You are helped to help others. You must live to help someone.

1 – “The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,

2 – That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

3 – And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

4 – And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

5 – And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:

6 – Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.” (Nehemiah chapter 1 verses 1 to 6)

It grieved him that his people are experiencing such horrible moments of their lives.

Nehemiah was in a foreign land when they brought him the news of the devastation of the state of Jews and the walls of Jerusalem. It grieved him that his people are experiencing such horrible moments of their lives. It was as though he was the one experiencing such havoc. That became a huge burden in his heart that his countenance changed.  And that was so obvious to the king.

He can’t be in a foreign land enjoying life while his people are mourning. How can he be in a foreign land singing the song of victory while his people are in their land singing the sing of defeat. How can he be in a foreign land celebrate while his people in their land are messed up.  How can he be a celebrity while his people who would have stood by his side to celebrate with him are mourning.

Those who are down fear no fall

Nehemiah left all it is he was enjoying and came back home to help his people navigate their challenges.  He has been exposed.  He has gained the knowledge and had some experience. He understood that now is the right time to deploy those experiences to help eradicate the mess that has befallen his people. The experienced he acquired is never for just himself but for his people also.

If he chose never to show up, it  wouldn’t have made much difference. Those who are down fear no fall. If he fails to act, his will get help from somewhere else and from someone else. And they will leave never to have regard for Nehemiah. He understood the implication if he fails to live up to expectations. He would have been regarded as a selfish and selfcentered person.

Conclusion

You don’t have to forget the land of your nativity and your people because you think you are now comfortable where you are and they can perish. If you fail to throw a hand of help when the opportunity calls, someone else will. Understand that it is God that took you to that land and blessed you so that you can be a blessing to others.
