Do not fight your son

1 – Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel.

2 – And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.

3 – Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?

4 – And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?

5 – Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?” (1Samuel chapter 29 verses 1 to 5)

David received the praises of the women which stirred king Saul heart and make it bitter against David.

Remember there was once a course between the Israel and the Philistines. It was one of king Saul’s son in the person of David that showed up and made an end to the course. When he confronted Goliath and defeated him before the whole armies of the Israelites and the Philistines. It was pronounced victory that humbled the Philistines. David received the praises of the women which stirred king Saul heart and make it bitter against David.

From that very moment the heart of king Saul became sour against David that he sort to kill David. He quickly forgot in a hurry how Goliath humiliated the army of the Israelites for forty days, throwing a challenge at them.  He quickly forgot the threats of Goliath when he said whoever that defeats the other, the one defeated shall serve the other.

8 – “And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

9 – If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.

10 – And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

11 – When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.” (1Samuel chapter 17 verses 8 to 11)

The day that the giant showed up again, the giant destroyer was not available.

It was a terrible moment confronting the armies of Israel. David showed up and was angry about the whole situation that he was eager to confront Goliath. The day that David challenged Goliath and defeated him was to be a remarkable day in the land of Israel.  But out of jealousy king Saul distorted his relationship with his son David. From that moment David began to run away from his boss, king Saul who has made the land of Israel uncomfortable for him.

Little did he know that there will be another course that might demand the attention and help from David. The day that the giant showed up again, the giant destroyer was not available. He was chased out of the land and he found shelter in the land of the enemy. Even when he decided to join the armies of the Philistines to fight the Israel which I am sure anything could happen in the process, the lord of the Philistines disappointed him.

6 – “Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.

7 – Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.

8 – And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

9 – And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

10 – Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master’s servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

11 – So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.” (1Samuel chapter 29 verses 6 to 11)

If David had been in that battle, king Saul and Jonathan wouldn’t have lost their lives.  Here is a father fighting his son who would have been watching his back. If king Saul was given an opportunity to live, he would have confessed that his greatest regret is the moment he fought his son David.

Conclusion:

One of the people you should not fight in this life, is your son. No matter what, never you grow envy over your son. Every son is designed to supersede his father. Never you out of envy and jealousy try to stop your son, it might cause more havoc than good.
