Seeing opportunity facing the giant
[17] “And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
[18] and carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
[19] Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
[20] And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
[21] For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
[22] And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
[23] And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
[24] And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.” (1 Samuel chapter17 verses 17 to 24 KJV)
It was the most astonished moment in his life when he got to the battle and he observed that the army of the Israelite were hiding over the challenge of a man
David has been a shepherd all through his life. He grew up in a family where he was relegated to being the keeper of the sheep. He has never had the priviledge to witness the battle until that fateful morning when his father called him for the first time to go to the battle field to see how his brothers are feeling. That was the most exciting moment in his life growing up as a teenager. He quickly yielded to that call, as he carried food to his brothers at the battle field.
It was the most astonished moment in his life when he got to the battle and he observed that the army of the Israelite were hiding over the challenge of a man. He couldn’t believe himself that the host army of Israel that has created so much fame in conquering battles, all of a sudden developed the attitude of fear that keeps them running away from the challenge of the giant. Whatever is their reason from going into hiding is what David could not ascertain at that moment. What amazed him was when he saw Goliath threatening the army of Israel and all the men of Israel when they saw the giant, fled from him and were sore afraid.
He never asked about how this man could be defeated, all he was after is what could be done to the person who defeats the giant and wipe away this shame from Israel
While everyone was running away from the giant, a younger teenager stood firm because in the midst of the ugly scene, all he could see was an opportunity. He saw an opportunity that no one else was able to see. He never asked about how this man could be defeated, all he was after is what could be done to the person who defeats the giant and wipe away this shame from Israel. That was the burning desire in his heart, about the reward that is befalls the person who will challenge and defeat this man.
“And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.” (1 Samuel chapter 17 verses 25 KJV)
It was as though David was not convinced by the first person testimony that he needed to have a confirmation to that. He quickly walked up to another person to ask.
[26] And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
[27] And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.” (1 Samuel chapter 17 verses 26 to 27 KJV)
When others were running away, someone saw an opportunity to negotiate. An opportunity to be elevated, and an opportunity to be announced. David saw the opportunity as a big and good deal which one should not let go. Always see an opportunity to every obstacle that comes your way.
Conclusion:
It is in your power to see any opportunity that comes with any circumstance. You can’t be running away from situation all the time. Every situation comes with great opportunity.
