6 characteristics of a true disciple
18 – “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 – Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 – Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Mathew chapter 28 verses 18 to 20)
The essence of christianity is to becoming like Christ.
- Total submission:
To becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ, you must be willing to submit completely. Half submission equals no submission. You must submit in everything. That is why a disciple is someone who is a disciplined follower of another person. The first key to prove you are will for the course to becoming a true disciple is in total submission.
19 – “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 – Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 – Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” (Ephesians chapter 5 verses 19 to 21)
- Total obedient:
Obedient is the master key to becoming like Christ. It is not just enough to be submissive. There are those who are submissive in the presence of the person they are following but never submissive in the person absent. To becoming a true disciple requires total obedient. Dr David Ogbueli said, “Half obedient equals no obedient.”
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:” (Isaiah chapter 1 verses 19)
The bible says ‘If’, It is optional. No one should force you into obeying. Obedient should flow from the heart of being willing to obey.
13 – “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 – If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
15 – If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John chapter 14 verses 13 to 15)
- Total Mastery:
Whoever you want to become, someone has been. Wherever you want to go, someone has gone there. Wherever you want to be, someone has been there. If only you can save yourself the stress to study the path of them who have gone ahead of you, it will do you much good. If you must become a true disciple of Jesus Christ, studying and meditating on the word and teachings of Jesus Christ is not optional. A true disciple must know and be conversant with the words and the teaching of the one he or she is following.
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua chapter 1 verses 8)
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2Timothy chapter 2 verses 15)
- Total understanding:
To become a true disciple of Jesus Christ, you must have a good understanding of His teachings and yield to His teachings. Nothing will matter to you than the course of the one you are following to please Him.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans chapter 1 verses 16)
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians chapter 1 verses 21)
- Total imitation:
To become like Christ and to be a true representative of Him should be the heart cry and desire of anyone who sincerely wants to become a true disciple. In all that we think, in all that say and in all that we do is it the way Christ would have done it.
1 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 – And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans chapter 12 verses 1 to 2)
Every one who desires to become a true disciple of Jesus Christ must conform in His life style.
“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians chapter 11 verses 1)
“And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” (Acts chapter 11 verses 26)
- Total duplication:
If one diligently adheres to the above characteristics of a true disciple, he or she will become a vessel of duplication. You are saved to save others. Every disciple of Christ must multiply disciples for Him.
“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” (John chapter 15 verses 16)
Conclusion:
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mathew chapter 6 verses 33)
“And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.” (Acts chapter 6 verses 7)
A moving church is a mobile church, and a mobile church is a growing church.
