5 ways to identify genuine Prophets
- Genuine Prophets utterances are consistent with God’s Word:
True prophets acknowledge that the prophecy of the scriptures is the highest realm of prophecy.
“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation chapter 19 verses 10)
- Genuine Prophets are men of brokenness and contrition:
Innate humility is the natural result of the multiple encounters such men have with God.
1 – “And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.
2 – And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.
3 – (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)
4 – And the LORD spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out.
5 – And the LORD came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth.
6 – And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
7 – My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.
8 – With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” (Numbers chapter 12 verses 1 to 8)
- Genuine Prophets are preachers of righteousness:
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2Timothy chapter 2 verses 19)
Such individuals have absolutely nothing to do with iniquity because they constantly reflect the Character, Attributes, and Values of God.
“And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;” (2Peter chapter 2 verses 5)
- Genuine Prophets are custodians and carriers of God’s Presence:
18 – “For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?
19 – Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
20 – The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.
21 – I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
22 – But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
23 – Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?
24 – Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah chapter 23 verses 18 to 24 )
This is so subtle because false prophets are “anointed,” which reinforces their deception. However, manifestations of Power aren’t signs of Divine Approval, but God’s Presence is.
- Genuine Prophets possess divine authority:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Mathew chapter 28 verses 19)
The Name of Jesus is the Signature of the Trinity *(Matt. 28:19).* In other words, any prophet who prophesies in the Name of Jesus (or by the Authority of the Godhead) without doubt has the Full Backing of Heaven.
20 – “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21 – And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
22 – When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.” (Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses 20 to 22)
