4 FACTORS TO BECOMING A GENUINE DISCIPLE
We are living a dispensation of people claiming to be disciples but they fail to realised what it takes to be and become a genuine disciple. To become a disciple, the person has to pass through some process of discipline. Until one properly undergoes the discipline process, he or she does not have what it takes to be called a disciple.
Disciple is never a titleship, it is an entitlement derived from intensively and diligently undergoing responsibility. People are not called disciples by selection; people are called disciples by undergoing some teachings and training. You must undergo the necessary training before you can be attributed as a disciple. Here are some factors to become a genuine disciple.
- You must develop the heart and ability to follow:
“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mathew chapter 4 verses 19)
You must be diligent to follow if you must become a genuine disciple. Your following should not be by compulsion, it is by willingness the heart. You must make up your heart to follow. Even when you are forced to follow, you must come to the point where you have to take the decision for it is your responsibility to chose who to follow.
“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” (1Corianthians chapter 11 verses 1)
There must be a reason why you should follow. Paul made it obvious that on the basis for anyone to follow him, is on the basis he is still in alignment following the teachings and principles of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ. It is never the old saying of some persons who claimed to have a walk with God, they will always say, “Follow our teachings but do not follow our pattern.” It is in your power to check whether the person you are following or about to follow has complete reverence for God Almighty.
- You must develop the willingness to follow:
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:” (Isaiah chapter 1 verses 19)
You must develop a willing heart if you must live to become a genuine disciple. Many people who claimed to follow, never do that with the complete willingness of their hearts. The whole body could be present but their hearts are far away. That is why when some are being blessed, others are not. You must be willing for the course of discipleship if you will harness the great dividends that follows.
“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.” (1Corianthians chapter 15 verses 10)
- You must be obedient to follow:
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:” (Isaiah chapter 1 verses 19)
Obedience is the key to becoming a genuine disciple. It is not about the one who says yes to instructions, it is about the one who goes all the way to carry out the instructions. I have seen people who before the authority they will act as though the authority can trust them with his whole heart. But behind the authority they will find it difficult to follow the leading. It only takes an obedient follower to become a genuine disciple.
- You must wholeheartedly follow:
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” (Mark chapter 12 verses 30)
You must be willing to follow wholeheartedly with all that is within you. Everything about an individual must align to the followership for it to yield virtues through him or her. Every part of an individual must be submitted and subjected to the obedience of followership. Jesus said to His disciples in one of the occasion as He was about bringing His ministry to an end,
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John chapter 14 verses 15)
Conclusion:
You have to make up your heart to diligently follow for you to become a genuine disciple. Every disciple of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, follows His teachings and principles without any reservations of whatsoever.
